New Research Reveals Impact of Mindfulness Meditation on Anxiety Disorders

A new study reveals that mindfulness meditation can be a powerful tool for those with anxiety disorders. The study, published in Psychiatry Research, found that after eight weeks of meditation, participants had less stress and anxiety. Researchers were actually able to measure changes in those who participated.

What is Mindfulness Meditation?

Mindfulness meditation is a technique that asks you to focus on the present moment. You must filter out distractions and other thoughts, so you can meditate in peace. By focusing on your breathing, you are able to let go of stress and find balance. The sitting practice is one way to do mindfulness meditation and simply involves sitting in a relaxed state.

Does Mindfulness Meditation Help Anxiety?

In the study, researchers found that the participants who used mindfulness meditation had lower stress-hormone and inflammatory responses compared to those who did not use this practice. A total of 89 people with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) took part in the study. The ones who were part of the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course felt better and had less anxiety.

Researchers believe that mindfulness meditation offers an inexpensive option for those who suffer from anxiety. It cannot replace all medications and therapy, but it can be a helpful tool.

Does Meditation Affect the Brain?

The latest research appears to support previous findings about meditation affecting the brain in a positive way. One study found that reducing stress through meditation could actually alter the brain. During this study, researchers discovered that the amygdala, which is a part of the brain that control emotions and stress, decreased in size. This was a positive change because the participants felt less stressed. 

Although mindfulness meditation takes practice and should be viewed as a long-term tool for managing anxiety, you do not want to stop your medications and therapy abruptly. It may be best to consider adding meditation to the other ways you handle this condition.
