About Me

Hi!  Thanks for stopping by!

My name is Colleen and I am a  Registered Nurse. I  have worked in Inpatient and Outpatient psychiatric settings as my profession.  Psychiatry and Mental Health is my passion and has been since I was a teenager!

It all started when I realized my Uncle displayed some really bizarre behaviors when I was young and as I grew older, I talked to my mom about this.   I was able to convince my mother to have him get help.   As it turns out he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and over the years since then, he has done very well with treatment.

My grandmother and mother also had problems with anxiety and panic disorder.   I realized early on that I too suffered from anxiety but it wasn’t until after my brother in law committed suicide that my coping mechanisms fell apart and I needed psychiatric treatment.   I was diagnosed with Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Panic Disorder with night terrors.   During this entire rough time in my life, I continued to work.

Other family members have also had to seek treatment for various mental illnesses. I advocate natural holistic therapy IF they can control symptoms.  For many people natural therapy is not enough.

It just seems so natural to blog and provide helpful information on Mental Health since I have so much experience with it.  Between my personal and family experiences and all the continuing education classes in mental health required for upkeep of a nursing license, I have a wide range of mental health knowledge.

I want to remove the stigma from getting treatment for Mental Health issues! Having to seek help for a mental illness is no different than seeking medical help for diabetes or hypertension or any other medical illness.

If my photo looks familiar, I also have a blog called My Dairy-Free Gluten-Free Life.  I originally shared my mental health posts there, but I felt it was time to start a blog that was dedicated to Mental Health.

Please know that this blog is a safe place to share your comments and ideas.
I welcome any suggestions you may have for this blog.  My goal is to make it a place for learning, sharing and having fun while improving your mental health.

I am married and have 2 sons who are married.   I have 2 grandchildren, one grandchild  is On The Autism Spectrum.

Lets enjoy life to the fullest,  Colleen
