How Anxiety Sensitivity Increases Your Fear Levels

The fear of fear actually has its own medical terminology. It is known as Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) and defined as the sensations you experience because you are afraid of having anxiety. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) is used to measure the level of fear, but you do not need a score to tell you that having AS increases your fear levels to an excruciating point.

Do You Have Anxiety Sensitivity?

Anxiety sensitivity makes your fear unbearable. It is often related to the belief that the anxiety symptoms can lead to more serious psychological or physical problems. For example, if you have AS, you may worry that you will have a heart attack during a panic attack. AS amplifies your fears, so you cannot think clearly.

The constant strain of being anxious about anxiety creates a cycle that is hard to break. If you are not experiencing anxiety at a particular point in time, then you worry that it will return soon. If you are in the midst of a panic attack or anxious episode, then you are afraid it will have lasting psychological or physical consequences, so your fear increases.

How to Deal with Anxiety Sensitivity

If you suffer from anxiety sensitivity, there is hope, and you can work on reducing it. First, you have to evaluate the causes of your anxiety and try to eliminate them. In many cases, stress and working too hard can lead to anxiety. One study recommends exercise to reduce anxiety sensitivity because it helps your body and mind focus on an intense activity that distracts you. Another option is to work on your mindset and try to control your thoughts. In addition, therapy and medications may be necessary in extreme cases.

Anxiety sensitivity is a real condition that is recognized by medical professionals. Once you understand the symptoms, you can work on decreasing its impact on your life.

I can empathize with you Amber. For years I couldn’t fly without taking prescription medication. But since I do fly so much now I can do it without meds! Woopee! But if the flight is bumpy at all I have to talk myself down.
