How You Can Support Your Partner During Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression can affect your entire family, and it is essential that you support your partner. According to Psychology Today, postpartum depression can improve if you show your support and are consistent with your help. There are several steps you can take to help your partner.

1. Talk to Your Partner

The worst thing you can do is ignore the postpartum depression and pretend it is not happening. You can help your partner by talking to her and reassuring her that you are by her side. The Postpartum Support International (PSI) group shares that you want to make sure she knows that she is not alone.

2. Help More Around the House

Some of the symptoms of postpartum depression are feeling tired, overwhelmed and unmotivated. Your partner may not be able to do the regular housekeeping or cooking. This is your chance to help more around the house and show her that she has a strong support network.

3. Encourage Her to Take Breaks

Even if a woman is suffering from postpartum depression, she may still be trying to do too much and taking on too much work. You want to encourage your partner to take breaks, focus on self-care and get help. You may have to do more of the work, but she will be able to reduce her stress levels and recover faster.

4. Go to Her Doctor’s Appointments

If your partner is comfortable with this idea, then you want to accompany her to all of her doctor’s appointments. Not only will you show your support, but you will be able to take notes for her and ask questions.

5. Encourage Her to Seek Help

In many cases, women who suffer from postpartum depression are embarrassed and scared to seek help. They may feel like failures and are too shy to share their fears. The most important thing you can do is to encourage your partner to seek help and stay committed to getting better.
