Shocking Reasons Why Binge Eating Disorders are So Common

The National Eating Disorders Foundation shares that binge eating disorders are the most common type of eating problem in the country. The nonprofit organization points out that binge eating is characterized by eating enormous amounts of food past the point of feeling full. One of the key differences between binge eating and bulimia is that binging is not followed by purging. The person who binges also feels shame, guilt and stress.

Binge eating disorder is a serious problem and not a simple case of indulging in too much cake once in a while. Instead, people with this condition eat to the point of feeling sick and suffer from severe self-loathing. There are multiple health risks associated with this disorder including diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol.

Easy to Hide

One of the main reasons why binge eating disorders have become prevalent is because they are easier to hide. If a person drastically starts to lose weight due to anorexia or bulimia, the changes can be noticed faster. However, researchers have pointed out that people who suffer from binge eating disorders do not lose weight. In fact, they may gain weight because there is no purging.

Social Acceptance

Indulging and overeating on occasion can be socially acceptable. It is considered a cultural norm to binge on chocolate or ice cream after a stressful day. Eating large amounts of junk food after a breakup is so common that it has become a stereotype. This is why binge eaters often go unnoticed.

Problems Getting Help

It is more difficult to get help for a binge eating disorder because it is considered a relatively new type of diagnosis, and many doctors do not specialize in it. Since this condition does not follow the usual patterns of eating disorders, it is harder for doctors to notice the symptoms. Misdiagnosis is also a problem, and some patients end up labeled as obese without getting the right type of treatment.

If you think you may be binge eating and want help, be sure to talk to your health care provider.
