Why a Magic Mushroom May Be the Key to Fighting Anxiety

Although it is already stirring up controversy, a new study reveals that magic mushrooms may help fight anxiety. The research focuses on psilocybin, which is a psychedelic compound found in mushrooms, and it has potential as an alternative therapy option. Psilocybin has now been part of two important studies that give anxiety patients hope.

The Research Outcomes

The most recent study from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore looked at how psilocybin can help anxiety. The researchers were surprised to find that one dose of psilocybin was enough to help patients fight anxiety and depression for six months. In a second part of the study, researchers compared patients who received psilocybin to those who got niacin. They found that 80 percent found relief from anxiety with psilocybin. It is important to note that this study focused on cancer patients with anxiety, but the findings are relevant for other people who have anxiety.

A previous study also focused on using psilocybin for patients with depression. Researchers noticed that those who were resistant to traditional antidepressant medications had positive results with the compound from magic mushrooms.

The Next Steps

Researchers want to continue to focus on the best way to use psilocybin for anxiety and depression. There is clearly a clinical benefit to magic mushrooms, but more studies are necessary before it becomes available to the public. This means doctors do not recommend that you or your loved ones attempt to use magic mushrooms on your own to treat anxiety. The studies were carefully controlled, and the participants received small amounts of the compound.

The future for psilocybin research will probably involve clinical trials on a larger scale. Researchers are hopeful about the outlook for this magic mushroom treatment and think it will provide an inexpensive option for patients suffering from anxiety.

I just read about this. Crazy. I hope that it helps people better understand the issues and what the mushroom does to make it better. I heard it is really helping PTSD too.

I’ve had anxiety most of my life and would have thought something like this would have made it worse, so this was interesting to read.
