Introduction

Sally Kempton is a versatile powerhouse of Far East philosophy. She has been studying and teaching spiritual wisdom and yoga for more than 40 years. She felt a calling early on to share her spiritual awakening with others, so that they too may reap the benefits of a heightened level of consciousness and reality.

She spent 20 years as a Saraswati monk, studying as a disciple of the Indian guru Swami Muktananda. It is there she learned traditional training in yoga practice and philosophy, before she began teaching independently in 2002. She is well known for her Awakened Heart Tantra retreats, workshops and trainings in “applied spiritual philosophy”.

The author of Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga also wrote Meditation for the Love of It: Enjoying Your Own Deepest Experience, as well as other books on meditation, yoga and spirituality. At SallyKempton.com she offers free resources as well as a free newsletter to combine “traditional spiritual wisdom with contemporary insight” to help you transform your life for lasting benefits.

Previously recorded tele-courses, CDs and audios are also available on the author’s website. She is a regular contributor to well-known yoga websites like YogaJournal.com, where her column “Wisdom” is one of the most popular. She has been interviewed on podcasts such as The Soul-Directed Life, and is regarded globally as a respected spiritual teacher.

The Idea

Sally Kempton’s goal with Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga is a simple one:

“To provide a practical guide for activating the currents of

the divine feminine in every aspect of your life.”

To do this, you must understand what the sages of Tantra have known since ancient times. When you follow the path of Shakti you release, sometimes spontaneously, inner feminine energies that open you up to a heightened level of spirituality. You also understand how to love truly and deeply, travel through your life with confidence, recognize the beauty and delights around you, and awaken your creativity.

Kempton has seen this powerful transformation take place in herself. She has also witnessed this in her students for decades. She believes that anyone can release the “transformative power of the goddesses of yoga” to deliver life-shifting experiences, opening you to a new and wonderful reality. The book is available as a digital download on Amazon, and also in paperback form.

How the Book Is Laid Out

At 396 pages, the book reviewed here is the e-book version. Formatting may differ in the paperback version, but the content remains the same.

The author dedicates the book to her mother, and then lists a Table of Contents. You begin with a list of Illustrations which corresponds to different sections of the book. Descriptions include The 2 Faces of the Goddess, the Goddess Durga, Dancing Kali and Parvati As a Maiden Yogini. There are 20 separate illustrations in all.

Chapter 1, entitled A Crown of Feminine Design: the Goddess Incarnates, begins with the story of how the author “… fell in love with the Goddess”. She recounts a Navaratri festival in India. Already a long time practitioner of yoga and Indian spiritualism, the author was asked to tell the story of the romance of the Goddess Sati.

As she stood to tell the mythological tale, she was seized with an ecstasy of “deep pulsing joy”. She would later learn that this ecstatic feeling was one of the many signatures of the goddess’ presence. She then recounts the story, and goes on to suggest how you can connect to the very real energy described in this myth-based account.

Chapter 2 is titled the Grand Tantric Narrative: Gods, Goddesses, and Worlds. A basic history of the tantric teachings of spirituality in a God and Goddess environment is discussed. You discover there are dozens of goddesses in Hindu belief, all representing and delivering different characteristics, behaviors and emotions. An in-depth coverage of the many Hindu goddesses would require multiple volumes, so 11 important ones will be focused on in this book.

  • Durga – the warrior Goddess, known as Hard to Conquer.
  • Lakshmi – appropriately called Auspicious, Lakshmi provides abundance, good fortune and wealth.
  • Kali – The Black One is terrifying and mysterious, bringing radical change into your life.
  • Parvati – The Mountain Lady is the goddess of marriage.
  • Saraswati – this is The Flowing One, goddess of creativity, music, language and eloquence.
  • Sita – Furrow is the Goddess of the earth, as well as guardian of the womb and faithful wife.
  • Radha – The Golden Girl goddess reveals divine longing as well as mystical surrender.
  • Dhumavati – The Lady of Smoke shows you how to turn life’s disappointments into spiritual growth.
  • Chinnamasta – this goddess sacrifices your false self, also known as The Severed-Headed One.
  • Lalita Tripura Sundari – also known as The Playful Beauty Of the 3 Worlds, this goddess is concerned with your mystical experience and sacred sexuality.
  • Bhuvaneshwari – this is the Lady of Space, the goddess of sacred space.

Chapters 3 through 13 discuss the mythology and reality of each goddess mentioned above, 1 Goddess per chapter. This includes historical references, ancient and modern spiritual beliefs, and how you can harness each goddess’ gifts to create a new spirituality for yourself.

The book closes with an Epilogue, 4 Appendices and a helpful Reader’s Group Guide. This guide is perfect for sharing the revelations of this book with your friends or local book club. Appendix 3 is titled Quiz: Goddess Power in Action. It bears mentioning, since it helps you understand, through a simple quiz format, how to reveal and awaken your own goddess powers. The author includes an annotated bibliography for further reading, and an About the Author section followed by About the Illustrator.
